I made a few modifications to the hardware to ease my everyday life.
I have read rumours about EU forbidding equipment that cannot be completely powered off. So I wanted to be prepared for the future and do something to ease demand for an another nuclear power plant. LG was a stand-by-only model and because I do not watch (well, sleep) DVDs on everyday basis, I tought that using a power switch is easier than unplugging the power cord.

The Switch The recycled power switch from a broken ZyXEL ADSL modem. |
For my disappointment LG did not have serial port header in place and this is quite limiting factor for safe firmware hacking. As for "skilled" electrician this was no big obstacle. The player is manufactured with RoHS compliant (lead free solder) processes and thus any "repairs" should be done according those standards. I had only old-fashioned lead solder, but did not care. Poisoning the lead free solder with lead could affect long-term mechanical and electrical durability. I think that the player is dead by other causes long before this causes any issues. And the serial port is a non-critical part.
